Hi all- fascinating! And concerning that this seems to be on the rise..

I just this morning saw a related article from NEPHAK on programs in Kenya for people who inject drugs. And the key message is that community involvement is needed! I’ve attached the newsletter — the article is on the bottom of page 2.

Hi all– I would love to hear more specifics. What exactly about trials might outside stakeholders oppose? What issues might you need to manage?

    For instance:

    • might they be opposed because of the cohort or type of population involved in the study?
    • Because trial participants receive money/reimbursement?
    • Because there are better health services available at a trial site than are available at regular healthcare centers?

Who has dealt with these types of issues–and how did you resolve them?

Very excited to meet those of you I don’t already know, and to make those that I do know work really hard!

Hello learners! I know this is a long module! I hope it’s given you a solid understanding of the guidelines document. The structure is straight forward, hopefully making it easy to use as GPP implementers.

I’m very interested to hear your thoughts on GPP goals vs. objectives vs. activities. Being able to distinguish between these three is fundamental to monitoring and evaluating GPP programs… so to my mind, fundamental to a strong program. Activities will be the easiest to measure, but often don’t reflect impact. Planning your activities within a strategic framework to reflect objectives and greater goals will be the key to showing how your individual activities lead to positive impact for the research and the community. Lots of thinking has gone into this, as well, with the M&E Toolkit we circulated earlier.

    Please keep your thoughts coming!

Hello all! So pleased to hear of everyone’s excitement and interest in these tools. And, Leader, thank you for making the connection between our workshop last week and the GPP course.

My sense is that we’ll talk quite a bit throughout the course about the need to be as academic as possible in our GPP/community engagement work. We’re going to look soon at developing strategic objectives for GPP planning as a first step to identifying indicators of success against which to measure. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and expertise!

As promised, I am also attaching here a DRAFT copy of the M&E tools so far. As John said, these tools have been built into an online database, which we cannot distribute at the moment as it’s not publicly functional. But the tools I’m posting here make up that database. You are welcome to print them out and use them in your work now, if you’d like!

I’m happy to answer any questions. And, as indicated, since these are still in draft form and we are just finalizing the first round of the toolkit database, I would ask kindly that you do not distribute the tools right now.

    All the best,

    Stacey

Hi everyone! Thanks for getting set up and introducing yourselves. As we’ve said many times, we’re all very excited for the launch of the online GPP course. My hope is that this will mark a new era of GPP implementation and that the course helps strengthen community and stakeholder engagement in our field — and beyond! Looking so forward to hearing from you all and learning from your experiences — and hearing your feedback on the course itself! — over the next 12 weeks.

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Stacey Hannah, a senior program manager at AVAC and oversee our GPP work. I’ve been with AVAC since around the time the 2nd edition of GPP was launched in 2011 and in my time have had the privilege of seeing it take hold more firmly in our field. I’ve also seen some real ‘GPP stars’ grow–many of whom are in this class! We all have valuable experience to share–whether this is some of your first experience with GPP, or whether you’re old hat. Please feel comfortable.. and continue to keep your thoughts coming!

    Best

    Stacey
