For this issue, we can prevent and plan for mitigation of social harm by:
– In order to determine the ways to manage and solve the problem of social harms, the research team should discuss with stakeholders including MSM groups, local human rights NGOs and media to learn about what issues or factors that can lead to stigma of and discrimination against trial participants, what issues that can lead to social harms before the implementation of the trial.
– In addition, before the trial, we should have a plan for promote the trial by constructively communicating with the society from the beginning to educate them about what the research institute is doing and for what purpose.UdomMemberThank you krub K. Rojchana. K. Rojchana wrote:
– For trial that has no consequence to trial participants and before the beginning of the trial, research team should have readiness plan to make sure that potential trial participants have proper understanding about the trial, and are psychological and societal ready. – If trial participants encountered problem, consequence, the research team and stakeholders should discuss how to solve the problem with the approach that focusses on trial participants.UdomMemberThank you krub K. Jureeporn. K. Jureeporn wrote:
– The trial should have consultation meeting with national level CABs to seek suggestions regarding stigmatisation and criminalisation of same sex relationship. The information and suggestions from the consultation can be used in planning for public relation about the trial to reach a wider audience.
– In addition, the research team should engage the community in preparation of the trial. This may be community forums to share ideas and to learn about the context of the target community. The information gained from the community forums can be used to prepare the community, in analyst of information for public relation, and for guiding the use of suitable language for target audience.
– On of the challenges in the trial is stigma and discrimination, therefore the trial should have an issue management plan in place to prevent and handle problems that may happen during the implementation.
– For trial participants who are experiencing negative consequences, the trial has to help trial participants according to research ethics. Furthermore, the trial should consult with community leaders for ways to mitigate the problem as well as to prevent the recurrence of the problem.UdomMemberThank you krub K. Piranun. She wrote:
– It is important that the research team builds relationship with business owners. It affords the research team to explain and discuss MSM-oriented research with them. Good relationship also allows the research team to learn from the community about the community’s perception as well as other community context, community leaders, and community key persons, and others (such as NGO workers).
– Counselling including discussion with trial participants, individual counselling, and group counselling
– Discuss with groups that are partners of the research team and stakeholders, community organisations and community leaders to understand the problems and to brainstorm for solutions and prevention of the problems.
– Psychological care and support process and peer counselling support to provide on-going support for participants
– Referral and follow up procedureUdomMemberThank you Krub K. Thippawan.
K. Thippawan wrote that first of all in the beginning the research team should carry out a study to learn about target population, how to approach the community as well as inform the community about the planned trial. This should be done regularly to monitor what happens in the community. This can be done by having regular meetings with local organisations, community leaders and community representatives.
Any negative event or social harm that occurs to trial participants, research team should discuss with trial participants about the incidents and documenting the incidents. Then the research team should have a meeting with local agencies/organizations to discuss approach to solve the problem and to prevent the recurrence of the problem.
UdomMemberThank you krub K. Wannapha. Her suggestions are self explanatory. No need for me to translate them. Here are the summary.
– Discuss with the area NGOs, CBOs to prevent and solve the problem;
– Meet and discuss with business owners, and bar operators to explain the work of the institute as well as to build trust and positive relationship with them;
– In-depth interviews trial participants about social harms that they are having or concern about, and their suggestions on how to prevent and solve the problems;
– Meet with community leaders to provide correct information about the work of the institute (or trial).UdomMemberสำหรับหัวข้อการสนทนาครั้งนี้คุณ Anne ตั้งประเด็นว่า

K. Rojchana wrote that the advantages of social media include it is good for public relation. It can reach target group faster and save time. It helps us to attain our goal on time. But the disadvantages are for some people who have no access to social media, they will miss out on information and whatever that going on. Thus they won’t be able to follow up with friends and get bored and don’t want to get involved. Other consequences will follow. Protecting confidentiality will be quite difficult because currently social media has considerable influence to every gender and age. Other problems might occur.

UdomMemberThank you krub K. Supabhorn for your post # 5193.
K. Supabhorn thinks that the disadvantages of social media are that we can communicate with trial participants or community stakeholders very quick because it is very popular with people in today society. Furthermore people like to use internet to search for information. Social media is a channel that research team can communicate basic information about a trial to the community and let them compare the pros and cons of that trial very quick. Lastly it helps us to be aware of different perspectives, opinions about the trial as well.
Moreover social media helps us in follow up of trial participants relatively swiftly. And it is a channel to share and distribute information about the trial to the community that is fast and wide spread.
However the drawback of social media is that in general people prefer seeking information using social media. If the information is wrong or focuses only on concerns or weaknesses, it can cause the community to scare of or concern about some research which could delay the trial.
UdomMemberThank you krub K. Thippawan for your post (#5178)
K. Thippawan wrote that the advantages of social media are as follows. It enables research team to disseminate news and information about a trial widely. For some communities that are not possible to approach, it can be used in particular recruitment and follow up of trial participants for example we can use various tracking system i.e. line, sms.
The disadvantages are sometime it is not possible to control the information that is sent out; communication via social media can be interpreted differently.
UdomMemberThank you krub K. Thanthip (post # 5175).

Advantages of social media are convenience for stakeholders to get access to information particularly information related to giving consent, about clinical visits; referral thru social media; and documentation of information and data to be used for various purposes later on.
However if stakeholders use social media in a negative way, it can be negative and compromise the credibility of the study because social media can be disseminated very quick and lead to misunderstanding.
Therefor using social media has to be done cautiously. Every step has to be considered carefully before sharing information in social media.
UdomMemberThank you krub Dr. Carlo. Here is the translation of your post (#5174).
UdomMemberThank you krub K. Piranun. Here is what she posted.
Advantages of social media:
It enables people to exchange info that they are mutually interested in. It serves as a small information warehouse where we can express our opinions and our viewpoints, exchange information, or ask questions about various topics to people who are interested in the same topics or know the topics to provide answers, i.e. Pantip.com.
It is economic, saves money in communicating with other people, convenient, quick, and provide easy access to info.
It serves as a conduit for showing our work such as writing, pictures, video. It allows other people to view our work and comment on them.
We can use it to deliver messages, and for public relation.
It can help to release stress for people who want to chat with friends about pleasant topics or to entertain ourselves.
It builds good relationship between friends.
Disadvantages of social media:
Some websites may disclose too much personal information. If users are not careful when providing information, malevolent persons could use the information negatively or violate privacy right of the person.
Social network is a wide spread society. If the users are naive or lack of common sense, they can be deceived.
It can be a channel for right violation, stealing other people’s work, or false claim or imposter because social media is a channel that allows us to share our work, our pictures with others and allows them to comment on them.
The information that members have to fill in is difficult to verify. This can be problematic for websites that have age stipulation. Or it can be deceived by people who do not really exist.
People who use social media too much or spend many hours in front of a computer may ruin their eyesights. If a person is too occupied with social media, his/her job or education could be badly affected.
Thus researchers have to be very careful in using social media to conduct research because social media is comparable to a two-sided coin – positive and negative.
UdomMemberI forgot to mention that K. Jureeporn’s and K. Wannapha’s original postings are in Thai. If you see the English versions, they are translated by the computer. My post after Anne’s is also in Thai. You have to change those into “Show original”. I don’t know how to do that. It just comes and goes as it please on my computer.
