Dr. Elisa Chavez
Dr. Chávez is a Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, San Francisco. She graduated from The University of California San Francisco, School of Dentistry and earned her certificate in Geriatric Dentistry from The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She has practiced in private, community health, long-term care and hospital settings and PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) serving frail, older adults in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is also the Director of the Pacific Center for Equity in Oral Health Care at the Dugoni School of Dentistry.
Dr. Elisa Ghezzi
Elisa M. Ghezzi, DDS, PhD, FGSA, has practiced geriatric dentistry for over 25 years providing dental care for residents of assisted living facilities in Michigan. She is an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Cariology, Restorative Sciences, and Endodontics at the University of Michigan (UM) School of Dentistry. She received her DDS from UM, completed a General Practice Residency at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN, trained in a geriatric dentistry fellowship at UM, and obtained both an MS in Clinical Research Design and Statistical Analysis and a PhD in Epidemiology from UM School of Public Health. Dr. Ghezzi serves as the past chair of the Michigan Coalition for Oral Health for the Aging and is a member of the Healthy Aging Committee of the Association for State and Territorial Dental Directors, and the Oral Health Workgroup of the Gerontological Society of America. Her research has focused on the effects of oral diseases on systemic health. She has written and lectured extensively on the topic of oral health care for older adults and persons with dementia.

Testing Methods for Communicable Diseases:
This lesson provides an overview of testing methods for communicable diseases. An orientation to types of tests and test results are reviewed. The lesson provides information about genomic sequencing, specimen management, and some common terms related to test results. The lesson should take about 15 minutes to complete.

Communicable Disease Control: Vector-Borne Diseases:
This lesson provides a brief overview of Vector-Borne Diseases (VBD), defined as infectious diseases of animals and humans caused by pathogenic agents transmitted by arthropod vectors. The lesson should take about 25 minutes to complete.
Importance of Public Health Investigations of Enteric Infections:
This lesson provides an overview of the importance of public health investigations of enteric infections. It should take about 30 minutes to complete.

SFDPH Communicable Disease Control Training: Animal Bites and Rabies:
This lesson provides SFDPH Communicable Disease Control training on animal bites. Specifically, the lesson gives information on CDCU’s role in supporting the prevention of rabies after animal exposure. There is information on epidemiology, testing, transmission, symptoms, PREP and PEP. The lesson should take about 45 minutes to complete.
Public Health Investigation of Vaccine Preventable Diseases:
This lesson provides an overview of the public health investigation of vaccine preventable diseases. The lesson includes VPD reports, determinations made, test results, interviewing, exposures and outbreaks, and a summary of actions for VPDs when working in CDCU. The lesson should take about 15 minutes to complete.
Diagnosis, Preventive, and Restorative Treatment for Patients with Special Health Care Needs (recorded webinar)
Course Description
This session will provide dental providers, and their support personnel with a skill set in diagnosing and delivering preventive and restorative dental treatment in traditional dental settings for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs across their lifespan.
Learning Objectives
- Learn from a self-advocate’s experience accessing specialized dental care.
- Understand barriers to delivering required dental services to CYSHCN across their lifespan in traditional dental settings and approaches to addressing them.
- Learn how to accommodate special needs while delivering preventive and restorative dental services in a traditional dental office.
- Learn ways to promote a happy clinical environment and prevent physical restraints for CYSHCN.
Speakers
Kathleen Moralez
Kathleen Moralez was born and raised in Montana. She completed her dental assistant training in Arkansas, where she became DANB certified in 1992. In addition to life experience, her dental assisting training includes sedation dentistry, emergency medical response, and advanced life support. She is also proficient in American Sign Language. Prior to working in Arizona for the last 28 years, she worked in Montana, Texas, and Oregon. Her current primary role is Senior Dental Assistant in the Dr. Rick Workman Advanced Care Clinic at The Center for Advanced Oral Health at A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health. Mrs. Moralez has received her National Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification. For the last thirteen years, her passion has been helping patients with special needs. Kathy is the mother of two sons with autism, ages 13 and 31. Her personal and professional experiences have helped her discover her professional calling: working with patients who have special needs and complex medical conditions. She hopes to inspire and guide others in better understanding and working with this underserved population.
Dr. Mai-Ly Duong
Mai-Ly (My-Lee) received her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) and Masters in Public Health (MPH) from A.T. Still University. She completed a Masters in Education (MAEd) with a dental emphasis from the University of the Pacific. She serves as a full-time Associate Professor and Director of Special Care Dentistry at the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health The Center for Advanced Oral Health. She works to support students, residents, and faculty treating individuals with special needs and complex medical conditions. She also works as a part-time associate dentist at Sundance Dental Care.
She completed a certificate in Advanced Education in General Dentistry from New York University Langone Medical Center. This program evolved her clinical skills to include CADCAM (Computer Aided Design Computer Aided Manufacturing), sedation dentistry, and advanced periodontal and oral surgery.
Dr. Maureen Perry
Dr. Maureen Perry is a Professor and Director of the Center for Advanced Oral Health at A.T. Still University, Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ASDOH). She completed a 3-year hospital training program focused on treating patients with medically complex conditions, behavioral health issues, and developmental disabilities Dr. Perry is a fellow of the Academy of Dentistry for Persons with Disabilities and is a diplomate of the American Board of Special Care Dentistry. She is a past president of the Special Care Dental Association and has served as a U.S. council member for the International Association for Disability & Oral Health.
Dr. Perry has had a 25-year career both practicing and teaching special care dentistry with a particular interest in working with patients with developmental disabilities. She has conducted research on oral health-related quality of life for people with developmental disabilities and education in special care dentistry, as well as lectured and published at the national and international levels. Her professional service includes the editorial boards of both the Special Care in Dentistry Journal and the Journal of Disability and Oral Health. In addition, she has served as a subject matter expert in special care dentistry for the US Navy (USNS Comfort Hospital Ship), the Hamad HealthCare Corporation of Qatar, and the Republic of Ireland.

Sexual Health & Sex Positivity Workshop
Facilitator: Joshua Oneal
In this workshop participants will explore sexual health topics through the lens of sex positivity and harm reduction. Participants in this workshop will define sexual health and unpack how their own relationship with sex and sexuality impacts their ability to connect with and support others. In addition we will discuss sexual health disparities and best practices in combating these disparities through counseling, education and prevention efforts.

Course Description
This session will provide dental providers and their support personnel with innovative strategies using an upstream approach to address the long-standing challenge of getting access to dental care by people with Special Health Care Needs. It will explain the scope of work of Registered Dental Hygienists in Alternative Practices (RDHAP) in implementing these strategies and increase learners’ understanding of different dental workforce models. It will also demonstrate some successful innovative projects and their efforts to address the long-standing challenge of getting access to dental care by people with Special Health Care Needs.

- Learn from a self-advocate’s experience accessing specialized dental care in San Francisco, California.
- Understand different innovative strategies to improve access to people with Special Health Care Needs.
- Understand RDHAP’s scope of work in California and how they can address the barriers to accessing specialized dental care in California.

Dr. Ray Stewart
Dr. Stewart is the Professor and Chair of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of California in San Francisco. He has had a distinguished career in both academic dentistry and private practice. He has served in varying roles as educator, clinical provider, researcher, program director and division chair and private practitioner where he was the Founding Partner in a large multi-office Pediatric Dental Practice on the Central Coast of California. His more than 4 decades of experience as a Pediatric Dentist has fueled his passion and commitment to expanding access to oral health care for children with special health care needs (SHCN), including those children with medical complexities. He is currently a Principal Investigator for a HRSA training grant which combines interprofessional training in Pediatric Dentistry and Dental Public Health. He has also participated in several statewide initiatives, developing courses designed to increase the capacity of general dentists to effectively serve young children, and to support the expansion of oral health into primary care medical settings. He is currently serving as Editor for a curated issue of the Journal of the California Dental Association on the subject of Dentistry for Patients with Special Health Care Needs scheduled for publication in June 2022. In addition to his role as Chair of the Division of Pediatric Dentistry at UCSF, he currently serves on several workgroups and task forces which are developing local and regional strategies to address the access to care problems faced by the SHCN population.
Henrietta Gutierrez & Jorden Gutierrez
Henrietta Gutierrez resides in Sacramento, California with her 2 sons. She has 2 beautiful sons, Jayden who is 9, and Jorden who is 8. Jorden was born with Down Syndrome. He is the light of their family. Being a single Mom of a kid with special needs hasn’t been easy but rewarding. Learning day by day by utilizing all available resources has been her safety net. Parenting didn’t come with a manual, but she strives to do what she can to make it easier on my family to ensure their needs are met. The beautiful family loves pets and spending quality time together.
Dr. Paul Glassman
Dr. Paul Glassman is the Associate Dean for Research and Community Engagement at the College of Dental Medicine at California Northstate University in Elk Grove, CA, and Professor Emeritus at the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni, School of Dentistry in San Francisco, CA. He has served on many national panels including the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) Committee on Oral Health Access to Services which produced the IOM report on Improving Access to Oral Health Care for Vulnerable and Underserved Populations. Dr. Glassman is a pioneer and has led the national movement to improve oral health using telehealth-connected teams and Virtual Dental Homes. Dr. Glassman has been prominent in advocacy efforts on a state and national level for health system reform to improve oral health systems for a wide variety of underserved groups.
Elena Francisco
Elena has practiced dental hygiene for more than 40 years in northern California. She has been on the dental hygiene faculty at the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry (Dugoni School) since 2005. She became licensed as a Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice (RDHAP) in 2005. As an RDHAP, she has treated patients of all ages, all with some special health care needs. She is currently the Program Director for RDHAP Program at the Dugoni School. Her passion is mentoring future clinicians to provide safe and evidence-based care to patients in the dentally underserved community.
Jean Calvo
Dr. Jean Marie Calvo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orofacial Sciences. Dr. Calvo earned her doctor of dental surgery degree at the UCSF School of Dentistry, where she also completed her specialty training in pediatric dentistry. Prior to doing her residency, she completed her Master’s of Public Health at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health with a focus on social determinants of health. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she provides dental care to children and adolescents, with the goals of improving their oral health and making dental visits fun. She is devoted to increasing access to dental care for all children and is particularly passionate about providing care to underserved children, such as those with complex medical conditions or other special health care needs. This is also a subject of her research.
Candace Nicolson
Candace Niccolson, MEd, BSDH, RDH, RDHAP graduated cum laude from Oregon Institute of Technology with BS in Dental Hygiene and Concordia University with a Master of Education, Curriculum, and Instruction. She has 15 years of experience in dentistry with a focus on providing dental hygiene care for people with special needs. Candace is currently the Dental Services Specialist at San Andreas Regional Center (SARC), a private non-profit corporation that provides services and supports to people with developmental disabilities. She is responsible for managing and provisioning dental services ranging from general dentistry to sedation dentistry and RDHAP services for SARCs 18,000+ consumers. Candace also provides consultation with SARC staff and other dental professionals to ensure the dental resources offered to meet the consumer’s unique dental needs.

It will also highlight some basics of oral health literacy and provide the learners with evidence-based techniques to promote oral health in clinical and community settings.

Sara Desumala
Sara Desumala is an adult who has learning disability, visual impairment, and Cerebral Palsy. She struggled finding a dentist who could cater to her special health care needs in the Bay Area.
Dr. Marita Rohr Inglehart
Dr. Marita R. Inglehart is a professor of dentistry in the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine, an adjunct professor in the Department of Psychology and an Inaugural University Diversity & Social Transformation Professor at the University of Michigan. She received her education at the University of Mannheim in Germany where she also was a faculty member.
Dr. Inglehart addresses the role of diversity and social justice in dental education and in oral health care settings. Her research has focused on how to educate future and current dental care providers to become culturally literate, and on documenting how poor oral health of patients from underserved backgrounds affects their quality of life.
She has published over 150 peer-reviewed publications, four books and numerous book chapters.
Dr. Erin Shah
Erin Shah received her D.D.S. from the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni Dental School (UOP). She stayed on to teach at UOP and worked in private practice and public health before specializing in Pediatric Dentistry. She completed her Pediatric Dentistry Residency at The University of Illinois at Chicago, then returned to the Bay area to continue teaching and working in private practice and public health. In residency and practice, she works with children with autism, complex medical conditions, and severe dental needs. Dr. Shah is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists. She serves on the Board and is Chair of Legislative Committee for the San Francisco Dental Society. Dr. Shah is an attending at Stanford Children’s Health/Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital. She is passionate about customizing dental prevention to families and their lifestyles and advocates on access to care issues.
Jamie Chang
Jamie Chang is a third-year dental student at the UCSF School of Dentistry, expecting to graduate in 2023. As a 2021-2022 Albert Schweitzer fellow, she engaged in a one-year fellowship committed to community service. Throughout this past year, she partnered with a nonprofit called The Arc San Francisco, which supports adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, to improve oral health outcomes among this population. She held weekly dental educational sessions over Zoom with Arc clients, as well as one-on-one sessions with them and their caregivers to provide individualized support and attention to their personal obstacles and experiences with dental care. Moving forward, she hopes to pursue pediatric dentistry and continue her commitment to empowering others, especially children from underserved backgrounds and those with special needs.
