EMS Stroke Training Module 2 of 2 – Case Studies Updated July 2024

Welcome to the SF Emergency Medical Services Agency Stroke Training Module 2 Course. There are two modules in this course. Please plan to have 1 hour set aside to take this course.

Course Overview: Provides the learner with an opportunity to apply the knowledge learned from Stroke Training part one to real life case scenarios. This is part two of a two part course. You must complete both parts (Modules 1 and 2) to earn 1 hour of CE credit.

Method of Evaluation: Online 10 question test (completed in Module 1); must receive a passing score of 80% or higher to pass this course and receive your CE credits. You are permitted to retake the quiz twice (3 attempts total). If you do not pass the quiz on the third attempt, please email erin.bachus@sfgov.org AND ronald.pikejr@sfgov.org to retake the course. You also need to complete the simple Knowledge Check quiz below after completing Module 2 to receive your continuing education credits.

EMS Stroke Training Module 1 of 2 Updated July 2024

Course Overview: Provides an in-depth overview of the various types of strokes. Discusses epidemiology, risk factors, and signs and symptoms of stroke. Reviews various stroke assessment tools. Describes the stroke chain of survival and the vital role EMS plays in stroke assessment and treatment. Reviews the importance of determining the time of last known well. This is part one of a two part course. You must complete both parts (Modules 1 and 2) to earn 1 hour of CE credit.

HCV Worker Onboarding Series

Description:

Welcome to the Academy’s HCV worker onboarding series. This series will provide you with a baseline knowledge of essential information you need for your role as a new worker. You can use this series as an onboarding tool or refresher training. This training includes 8.5 hours of training materials.

Learning Objectives:

  • Acquire baseline knowledge of essential information needed to work with clients.
  • Understand client needs and how to support clients compassionately. 
  • Increase knowledge of stigma and harm reduction principles.
  • Develop self-care practices.
  • Learn best practices to prevent HCV.

Instructions:

  1. Complete the self-paced training series by clicking on the “enter” button for each course. After you complete each course, you will see the updated status on your learner dashboard. Make sure you have your cookies enabled on your computer in order to track your completion status.
  2. Once you have completed your onboarding or refresher training, go to your learner dashboard. In the completed courses section, enter a date range and click on “print transcript.”
  3. Save your transcript as a pdf and upload it to the Training Record Upload tab found at the bottom of this page. If you have already completed any of the following courses, you do not have to retake the training. Your completion should already be recorded on your transcript. Just make sure that the date range you choose include the dates when you have completed the course.
  4. On completion of the series and submission of transcript record, a course administrator will review your record. Once approved by the administrator, you will receive a certificate of knowledge in the role.

August 26th – 30th HCV/HIV/STI Overdose Prevention Test Counselor Pre-Training

Upcoming In-Person Training: August 26th – 30th

This online course provides the information that forms the foundation for the HCV/HIV/STI Overdose Prevention Test Counselor Training you will be attending soon. The live trainings and the Pre-training course are built on almost 30 years of experience talking with people about stopping the transmission of HIV.

This online course is separated into reading modules, followed by a 32-question quiz. There is no time limit to complete the reading or quiz. You need at least 80 percent of correct responses in order to be eligible to participate in the in-person training. If you do not pass on the first try, you can retake the quiz one more time after reading the material again.

Learners are not able to self-enroll in the pre-training course at this time. Instead, your site coordinator should have registered you for this program and you should have received an email notification from the SFDPH Center for Learning and Innovation saying you have been enrolled in this course. If you have not yet received this email notification, please reach out to your site coordinator first to ensure they have submitted an application for your registration in this program.

Healthcare for People Experiencing Homelessness: Barriers and Strategies That Work (recorded webinar)

Training Overview:

People experiencing homelessness suffer illness and premature death at rates much higher than the general population. Black / African American people are severely over-represented among people experiencing homelessness nationally and particularly in San Francisco. This webinar will address the causes of these disparities and strategies for mitigating their adverse effects.

At the conclusion of this training, participants should be able to:

  • identify at least 3 barriers to healthcare for people experiencing homelessness relevant to their work setting.
  • address the health effects of intersecting disability, disadvantage and discrimination on people experiencing homelessness.
  • identify 3 strategies relevant to their work setting for improving healthcare access and reducing healthcare disparities for people experiencing homelessness.

About the Trainer:

Barry Zevin, MD is Medical Director of Whole Person Integrated Care: Street Medicine, Shelter Health and Maria X Martinez Health Resource Center for the San Francisco Department of Public Health. He has 32 years of experience as a physician delivering healthcare to people experiencing homelessness in San Francisco. He is Clinical Professor of Medicine at University of California San Francisco School of Medicine. Dr. Zevin has provided leadership for many innovative SFDPH projects including the current low barrier buprenorphine project to improve access to treatment for addiction disorders for individuals experiencing homelessness.

Instructions:

  1. Watch all four video segments. You will not be able to progress through the course until you’ve completed each segment. For closed captions, go to the lower right hand corner of the video screen and click on the three vertical dots. Click on closed captions to turn English captions on. Enable cookies on your computer to save your progress.
  2. Complete the evaluation.
  3. Pass the quiz.
  4. You will find a certificate of completion on your learning dashboard.
  5. If you are requesting CEs, CE certificates will be sent separately.
  6. A copy of the powerpoint slides and a list of references can be downloaded from the Resources section, under Course Tools, on the menu on the right.

As of June 19, 2024, we are no longer providing CEs for taking this course. Everyone who has requested CEs for this course prior to June 19th should’ve received their CE certificates by email.

Training Overview:

This training will explore how safety planning can be an effective tool for harm reduction service providers when preventing violence or the escalation of violence through developing rapport with program participants and understanding the nature of violence. Drawing from motivational interviewing techniques and tools as well as the risk-set-setting model, session attendees will have the opportunity to develop a safety plan outline.

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Define violence.
  • Identify three strategies to build rapport with program participants.
  • Review the steps for creating a safety plan.

06.12.24 9:30 am – 11:30 am – Improving Health Care for People that Use Drugs (Online Training)

Wednesday, June 12, 9:30 am – 11:30 am

Training Overview:

This two hours training is designed to help non-clinical service providers engage with their clients who use drugs around issues related to health care. It will explore the systemic and individual context in which people who use drugs (PWUDs) seek health care and the unique challenges they face in accessing quality health care. The training will provide tools and strategies to offer clients when navigating the health care system, highlighting ways to strengthen and build a more positive relationship between clients who use drugs and their health care providers. 

 

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify some of the unique health care needs of PWUD 
  • Identify different points of access to Healthcare for PWUD. 
  • Describe the institutional, social and behavioral factors that influence this, including drug related stigma. 
  • Define Patient – EASE in measuring the attributes of effective healthcare provision– Patient centered, Efficient and coordinated, accessible, safe and confidential, and Effective and competent.  
  • Develop strategies to assist PWUD in preparing for healthcare visits including decisions around when and how to disclose their drug use to medical providers. 
  • Identify strategies and tools to help clients who use drugs to build positive, trusting relationships with their health care provider.
