Healthcare for People Experiencing Homelessness: Barriers and Strategies That Work (recorded webinar)

Training Overview:

People experiencing homelessness suffer illness and premature death at rates much higher than the general population. Black / African American people are severely over-represented among people experiencing homelessness nationally and particularly in San Francisco. This webinar will address the causes of these disparities and strategies for mitigating their adverse effects.

At the conclusion of this training, participants should be able to:

  • identify at least 3 barriers to healthcare for people experiencing homelessness relevant to their work setting.
  • address the health effects of intersecting disability, disadvantage and discrimination on people experiencing homelessness.
  • identify 3 strategies relevant to their work setting for improving healthcare access and reducing healthcare disparities for people experiencing homelessness.

About the Trainer:

Barry Zevin, MD is Medical Director of Whole Person Integrated Care: Street Medicine, Shelter Health and Maria X Martinez Health Resource Center for the San Francisco Department of Public Health. He has 32 years of experience as a physician delivering healthcare to people experiencing homelessness in San Francisco. He is Clinical Professor of Medicine at University of California San Francisco School of Medicine. Dr. Zevin has provided leadership for many innovative SFDPH projects including the current low barrier buprenorphine project to improve access to treatment for addiction disorders for individuals experiencing homelessness.

  1. Watch all four video segments. You will not be able to progress through the course until you’ve completed each segment. For closed captions, go to the lower right hand corner of the video screen and click on the three vertical dots. Click on closed captions to turn English captions on. Enable cookies on your computer to save your progress.

  4. You will find a certificate of completion on your learning dashboard.

  • Increase knowledge of stigma and harm reduction principles
  • Develop workers’ self-care practices

Training Overview:

This training will explore how safety planning can be an effective tool for harm reduction service providers when preventing violence or the escalation of violence through developing rapport with program participants and understanding the nature of violence. Drawing from motivational interviewing techniques and tools as well as the risk-set-setting model, session attendees will have the opportunity to develop a safety plan outline.

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Define violence.
  • Identify three strategies to build rapport with program participants.
  • Review the steps for creating a safety plan.

06.12.24 9:30 am – 11:30 am – Improving Health Care for People that Use Drugs (Online Training)

Training Overview:

This two hours training is designed to help non-clinical service providers engage with their clients who use drugs around issues related to health care. It will explore the systemic and individual context in which people who use drugs (PWUDs) seek health care and the unique challenges they face in accessing quality health care. The training will provide tools and strategies to offer clients when navigating the health care system, highlighting ways to strengthen and build a more positive relationship between clients who use drugs and their health care providers. 

 

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify some of the unique health care needs of PWUD 
  • Identify different points of access to Healthcare for PWUD. 
  • Describe the institutional, social and behavioral factors that influence this, including drug related stigma. 
  • Define Patient – EASE in measuring the attributes of effective healthcare provision– Patient centered, Efficient and coordinated, accessible, safe and confidential, and Effective and competent.  
  • Develop strategies to assist PWUD in preparing for healthcare visits including decisions around when and how to disclose their drug use to medical providers. 
  • Identify strategies and tools to help clients who use drugs to build positive, trusting relationships with their health care provider.

Annual Training for Authorized Backflow Prevention Assembly Testers 2024

This training reviews the basic responsibilities of Authorized Backflow Prevention Assembly Testers in San Francisco. Topics covered include updates to the City’s Cross-Connection Control Program, obtaining backflow tags, using CCAMS, maintaining a permit to operate, tester violations and enforcement, and tester responsibilities.

Directions

  1. Watch all five videos from the annual training. If you need to stop and come back later, please complete the video that you are on to prevent having to rewatch it when you return. You may download the transcripts of the videos on the lesson pages.
  2. After completing each video, select “next lesson” to record completion and to proceed to the next video.

HCV Navigation Training (4/24/24 12:30-2:30pm)

Training Overview:

This training aims to support people who work directly with people who are at risk of or living with hepatitis C (HCV). The training will focus on the role that navigation plays in HCV care, relationship building, and practical strategies to support HCV care along with other goals or priorities. The training will feature a panel of experts from End Hep C SF’s Community Navigator program. A basic knowledge of HCV is helpful, but all are welcome and will be accommodated. Registration is open to staff of all CHEP-funded partners. 

Learning objectives:

  1. Be able to explain how navigation fits into the HCV care cascade
  2. Understand potential support roles that navigators can play and how these can benefit participants 
  3. Build awareness of how to engage participants and effectively build rapport 
  4. Learn person-centered navigation skills that can be used in a variety of settings including integrated service centers

CEs will not be offered for this training.

This training will share resources and information on HCV services available in San Francisco and review effective strategies for connecting people to care. It is especially useful for community test counselors and frontline workers who engage with people at risk of hepatitis C (HCV) infection. Registration is open to all CHEP-funded partners’ staff.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to: 

  • Provide general information about hepatitis C infection and its treatment  
  • Identify three strategies for having purposeful conversations with clients 
  • Understand distinguishing features of three types of HCV treatment services and identify appropriate services for a variety of situations 
  • Describe HCV treatment services available in San Francisco and identify two ways to find and share current program details with clients
