The GPP course has helped me a lot with understanding GPP. How do you enforce the rest of the staff, especially your seniors to follwo GPP. I feel that it is mostly the community team  who follows GPP practises and it should be everyone. how do we educate the rest of our teams about the GPP principles.

Engaging with youth is not always easy, best thing to start with is to ensure that the staff themselves understand what Youth friendly mean. If you mistreat a young person from the first encounter, they might not come back to site.  Denver, we are currenlty recruiting for a PrEP study in adolescents and believe me we have to sell PrEP to these adolescents because in our communities they do not always have access to information or internet so we have to work harder to do education. We have youth programs taking place and when the youth come either for Drama classes a dance classes then we talk about the research. We also incentive programs for youth where they earn point for all the activities they do at our site and the can use their points to biy either a meal or to print and make copies. They do not have access to computers at home and our site and the libratry are the only places they can use to access comouters. It is not easy but we rty different methods to ensure we continously engage with the youth

The CAPRISA Team had great stratergies that helped with the implementation of their research. Their stakeholder engagement activities were on point and were developed. It is important to engage with the community in other aids and not only when you as the site need the community for your research in orderr to build relationships. Recently in our community there was a lot of protests and unrest, matriculants had to be accomodated elsewhere so that their studies would not be interrupted. As the staff in our site we  collected donations amongst our organisation to help with food and toiletries for the students. This was outside our mandate but when working with community you must engage with them in all aspect and needs in order to build trust and strengthen the relationship.

Our CAB as Hilda mentioned that they are not involved in the developmental phase of the ICF as well as the Protocol. We would get the protocol before it is finalised to review and make any recommendation that the CAB would see fit. At a cohort study we once did in Youth and also with other studies we used to conduct we would give a cash incentive.  The CAB advised us not to use a cash incentive and rather a shopping centre voucher in the same value because our participants do not travel to site. One of the reasons was because the Youth would buy alcohol with the cash incentive. Also before we conducted a Male circumcision study. Our CAB suggested we engage older males in the community to explain further what the study was about because when they heard the words ‘Medical male circumcision’ they thought we would circumcise the boys. In our community traditional circumcision is of the utmost importance in males and that is what gives him the right to be called a Man. So the community had other ideas because of the word used. After we explained to the community members what the study was about. They were willing to sign consent for their kids and the rumour was cleared

I think for every study design or protocol design, it is important to look at the laws of the country where the research would be conducted. For the sake of the trial if participants were not given standard of HIV prevention then that would be against GPP guidelines. The department of Health as a stakeholder should have been engaged in the developmental phase of the study in order to play a role in assisting with advocating for these needles to be made available perhaps for the duration of the trial and maybe a year after a trail. It would be unethical to expect drug users in a trial to use dirty needles as that would increase the risk of infection during the period the participant is in the trial.

Formative research is like community mapping. You get as much information about the community, population number of people, needs analysis of the community based on the research you want to conduct within the community.

Community engagement is when you do certain activities to engage with the community. We have Public holiday events around the theme of the holiday and sometimes we team up with other organisations around the community to have great impact.

I think I agree with Charles. We only engage with stakeholders when we busy with a trial and we actually need to keep the communication going. It is hard to set a SMART objective. I am learning some interesting things here. I would agree with Edna as well in the question asked by Heidi. I believe according to GCP guideline if you are going to involve participants in a research trial, you must have a plan that will be beneficial to the participants after the trial and one of them is o give HIV treatment and care and it can also be done through referrals to other facilities if your research centre can not provide.

    Hi Everyone

Our stakeholder engagement is quite good. We have the CAB, NGO forums where different NGO’s in the community share about the work they do in the community. We also have public event to reach more stakeholders.

    Hi

I requested if I could be change from using track B to use Track A. When I made the selection it was not clear and after the webinar I learnt that because I am working with stake holder directly I will need to do Track A. Would it be possible to make this change. I have already viewed lesson 1 and I do not want to do the assignment before I know if the change can be done
