In our site our CAB vice Chair sits on the ACTG Global CAB (GCAB). Every time a protocol is being developed he receives a draft which he shares with other members during their monthly meetings. A questionnaire accompanies the draft which tries to establish;
i) whether members understand the protocol
ii) whether it addresses or tries to answer a problem that is relevant the site
iii) whether members would participate in the study if they qualified.
To assist CAB members review the protocol we get one of our scientists to take members through the protocol, demystify the medical jargon thus helping them review the protocol. In our case therefore we do not expert CAB members but get experts to help members understand the protocol so as to have the capacity to review.
CharlesMemberFormative research is the baseline, community mapping, aims to establish community stakeholders, the myths and misconceptions so as to develop appropriate tools to engage the community. Community engagement is the process of reaching out to the community after establishing gate keepers for their buy in.
formative research is also a form of or a step in community engagement.
In preparation for our first vaccine study we mapped the community in an effort to establish critical stakeholders, we eventually reached. we then engaged them to in preparation for the study and addressed all their fears and concerns. Political leaders initially had concerns but eventually came out strongly in support of our study. we also have a CAB that meets regularly to get updated on our research activities while giving us community concerns.
CharlesMemberHi GPP facilitators,
I completed the lesson 3 lesson check, clicked the exit button and it did not respond. does it mean I will have to go through it again? please advice, thanks.
thanks.
CharlesMemberLesson 2 module 2 assignment is challenging and technical I plan to spend more time on this topic to fully understand. I have learned that we have not been engaging stakeholders in systematic ways going to them only when we need to recruit participants for our protocols, hardly involving them early in the process. We have engaged stakeholders previously to address challenges that have arisen which is fire fighting instead of fire prevention. One of the challenges that will need to be addressed is having adequate budget for stakeholder engagement to create a supportive environment for HIV prevention research. This training is critical in improving our stakeholder engagement, I am happy to have enrolled.
08/29/2015 at 6:47 am in reply to: How do your communities, nation handle Sexual Gender Based Violence cases? #3551CharlesMemberIn Kenya gender based violence is common mostly against women and in many cases go unreported especially rape because of the stigma this causes. In instances when reported it is sometime resolved traditionally with the father of the girl being paid so that matter does not proceed to court as the girl in most cases a minor being forced to withdraw the complain. The slow court process also frustrate efforts to seek legal redress since the case can drag on for a year! Few cases of violence again men are now being reported especially extreme cases of wives chopping off genitals of their husbands. this tend to attract sensational media attention and cases against the women tend to be attended to faster
More organizations dealing with gender violence need to come up to ensure young female victims of GBV are not coerced to withdraw cases and deterrent punishment meted out to offender, with the media support in disseminating such efforts .
CharlesMemberI have uploaded the assignment and am not sure whether it is done as expected. I only see “uploaded assignment” am i good to go and is this the end of the week’s work?
CharlesMemberStakeholders should be engaged in the development of results messages so that they can own the results messages and help dispel misconceptions if any on the same in their relevant communities. this will be possible if they were engaged from the beginning and received research updates throughout the process.
CharlesMemberI had difficulties with registration and profile which I have sorted out. I want to complete course 0 today to that I can catch up with colleagues.
