Dental Care Coordination for People with Developmental Disabilities (recorded webinar)

Course Description

This session will provide dental providers and their support personnel with an understanding of dental care coordination in SF Bay area for people with special health care needs. Learners will learn about the barriers to effectively implementing care coordination for this vulnerable population. Learners will also learn about the existing lists of dental providers used by Child Health and Disability Prevention Program (CHDP). You will hear about the dental care coordination system used by the Alameda County Public Health Department, Office of Dental Health. The session will highlight some real-time stories from a wonderful parent of on self-advocate’s accessing dental care journey.

Roxana M. Lopez & Jake Lopez

Roxana Lopez is a Bilingual Case Manager at Support for Families. In her role she support other families with children with disabilities through information and education. She is also a mother of 3 wonderful boys. One with Autism and my other son has a Sensory Processing Disorder and Dyslexia. Her youngest son suffers from anxiety when attending any medical appointment. As parents they also face their own challenges. She has Fibromyalgia and her husband was born with a condition called congenital deformity of bilateral legs. They have overcome many challenges for their kids to start receiving dental care. They understand they still have long way to go, but with the support of dental providers that are willing to serve families like theirs she is hopeful that one day kids and adults with special needs will have the care they deserve.

May Bosco

May Bosco is a registered dental hygienist in Alternative Practice. She been in dentistry for over 20 years and practicing dental hygiene for 15 years. May completed registered dental hygienist in alternative practice (RDHAP) program at University of Pacific, in 2010. Since then, she has provided services to a wide spectrum of patients including patients with dementia, and intellectual disability. May also provides oral health training as Child Health and Disability Program dental hygienist with Department of Public Health. Her both personal and professional goal is to improve access to oral care for everyone.

Dr. Shakalpi Pendurkar

Dr. Shakalpi Pendurkar is the current Dental Health Administrator for Alameda County Public Health Department’s Office of Dental Health. Prior to joining us, Dr. Pendurkar provided leadership on oral health in two Bay Area counties. For over 19 years, Dr. Pendurkar has worked as Lead Supervising Dentist at Gardner Health Services, an FQHC in the heart of downtown San Jose. She is committed to improving access to care and the overall health of her patients and has successfully advocated for the fluoridation of San Jose’s drinking water. She is the Founder and Chair of the Collaborative for Oral Health and Chief Advisor to Santa Clara County Oral Health Program. She is part of Santa Clara County’s Coalition Against Sugar-Sweetened Beverages.

Dr. Karen Raju

 Dr. Karen Raju is a foreign-trained dentist from India who has credentialed with a Master of Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley, and received her residency certificate in Dental Public Health from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She is passionate about identifying and addressing vulnerable and underserved communities’ oral and public health problems across the lifespan through education, research, and service. Her research work includes a critical appraisal of the available evidence on pregnant women, people with special health care needs, and older adults’ oral and public health issues. She has published and presented her work both at national and International platforms.

Geriatric Dentistry for People with Developmental Disabilities (recorded webinar)

Speakers:

Dr. Elisa Chavez

Dr. Chávez is a Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, San Francisco. She graduated from The University of California San Francisco, School of Dentistry and earned her certificate in Geriatric Dentistry from The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She has practiced in private, community health, long-term care and hospital settings and PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) serving frail, older adults in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is also the Director of the Pacific Center for Equity in Oral Health Care at the Dugoni School of Dentistry.

Dr. Elisa Ghezzi

Elisa M. Ghezzi, DDS, PhD, FGSA, has practiced geriatric dentistry for over 25 years providing dental care for residents of assisted living facilities in Michigan.  She is an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Cariology, Restorative Sciences, and Endodontics at the University of Michigan (UM) School of Dentistry.  She received her DDS from UM, completed a General Practice Residency at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN, trained in a geriatric dentistry fellowship at UM, and obtained both an MS in Clinical Research Design and Statistical Analysis and a PhD in Epidemiology from UM School of Public Health.  Dr. Ghezzi serves as the past chair of the Michigan Coalition for Oral Health for the Aging and is a member of the Healthy Aging Committee of the Association for State and Territorial Dental Directors, and the Oral Health Workgroup of the Gerontological Society of America.  Her research has focused on the effects of oral diseases on systemic health.  She has written and lectured extensively on the topic of oral health care for older adults and persons with dementia. 

Diagnosis, Preventive, and Restorative Treatment for Patients with Special Health Care Needs (recorded webinar)

Course Description

This session will provide dental providers, and their support personnel with a skill set in diagnosing and delivering preventive and restorative dental treatment in traditional dental settings for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs across their lifespan. 

Learning Objectives

  • Learn from a self-advocate’s experience accessing specialized dental care.
  • Understand barriers to delivering required dental services to CYSHCN across their lifespan in traditional dental settings and approaches to addressing them.
  • Learn how to accommodate special needs while delivering preventive and restorative dental services in a traditional dental office.
  • Learn ways to promote a happy clinical environment and prevent physical restraints for CYSHCN.

Speakers

Kathleen Moralez

Kathleen Moralez was born and raised in Montana. She completed her dental assistant training in Arkansas, where she became DANB certified in 1992. In addition to life experience, her dental assisting training includes sedation dentistry, emergency medical response, and advanced life support. She is also proficient in American Sign Language. Prior to working in Arizona for the last 28 years, she worked in Montana, Texas, and Oregon. Her current primary role is Senior Dental Assistant in the Dr. Rick Workman Advanced Care Clinic at The Center for Advanced Oral Health at A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health. Mrs. Moralez has received her National Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification. For the last thirteen years, her passion has been helping patients with special needs. Kathy is the mother of two sons with autism, ages 13 and 31. Her personal and professional experiences have helped her discover her professional calling: working with patients who have special needs and complex medical conditions. She hopes to inspire and guide others in better understanding and working with this underserved population.

Dr. Mai-Ly Duong

Mai-Ly (My-Lee) received her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) and Masters in Public Health (MPH) from A.T. Still University. She completed a Masters in Education (MAEd) with a dental emphasis from the University of the Pacific. She serves as a full-time Associate Professor and Director of Special Care Dentistry at the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health The Center for Advanced Oral Health. She works to support students, residents, and faculty treating individuals with special needs and complex medical conditions. She also works as a part-time associate dentist at Sundance Dental Care.

She completed a certificate in Advanced Education in General Dentistry from New York University Langone Medical Center. This program evolved her clinical skills to include CADCAM (Computer Aided Design Computer Aided Manufacturing), sedation dentistry, and advanced periodontal and oral surgery.

Dr. Maureen Perry

Dr. Maureen Perry is a Professor and Director of the Center for Advanced Oral Health at A.T. Still University, Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ASDOH). She completed a 3-year hospital training program focused on treating patients with medically complex conditions, behavioral health issues, and developmental disabilities Dr. Perry is a fellow of the Academy of Dentistry for Persons with Disabilities and is a diplomate of the American Board of Special Care Dentistry. She is a past president of the Special Care Dental Association and has served as a U.S. council member for the International Association for Disability & Oral Health.

Dr. Perry has had a 25-year career both practicing and teaching special care dentistry with a particular interest in working with patients with developmental disabilities. She has conducted research on oral health-related quality of life for people with developmental disabilities and education in special care dentistry, as well as lectured and published at the national and international levels. Her professional service includes the editorial boards of both the Special Care in Dentistry Journal and the Journal of Disability and Oral Health. In addition, she has served as a subject matter expert in special care dentistry for the US Navy (USNS Comfort Hospital Ship), the Hamad HealthCare Corporation of Qatar, and the Republic of Ireland.

Sexual Health & Sex Positivity Workshop

Facilitator: Joshua Oneal

In this workshop participants will explore sexual health topics through the lens of sex positivity and harm reduction. Participants in this workshop will define sexual health and unpack how their own relationship with sex and sexuality impacts their ability to connect with and support others. In addition we will discuss sexual health disparities and best practices in combating these disparities through counseling, education and prevention efforts.

Innovation in the Dental Care Delivery System for People with Developmental Disabilities (recorded webinar)

Course Description

This session will provide dental providers and their support personnel with innovative strategies using an upstream approach to address the long-standing challenge of getting access to dental care by people with Special Health Care Needs. It will explain the scope of work of Registered Dental Hygienists in Alternative Practices (RDHAP) in implementing these strategies and increase learners’ understanding of different dental workforce models. It will also demonstrate some successful innovative projects and their efforts to address the long-standing challenge of getting access to dental care by people with Special Health Care Needs.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn from a self-advocate’s experience accessing specialized dental care in San Francisco, California.
  • Understand different innovative strategies to improve access to people with Special Health Care Needs.
  • Understand RDHAP’s scope of work in California and how they can address the barriers to accessing specialized dental care in California.
  • Learn about some successful innovative projects and their efforts to address the long-standing challenge of getting access to dental care by people with Special Health Care Needs.
  • Learn about SARC’s dental program and how it addresses the complex needs of its consumers.

Dr. Ray Stewart

Dr. Stewart is the Professor and Chair of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of California in San Francisco. He has had a distinguished career in both academic dentistry and private practice. He has served in varying roles as educator, clinical provider, researcher, program director and division chair and private practitioner where he was the Founding Partner in a large multi-office Pediatric Dental Practice on the Central Coast of California. His more than 4 decades of experience as a Pediatric Dentist has fueled his passion and commitment to expanding access to oral health care for children with special health care needs (SHCN), including those children with medical complexities. He is currently a Principal Investigator for a HRSA training grant which combines interprofessional training in Pediatric Dentistry and Dental Public Health. He has also participated in several statewide initiatives, developing courses designed to increase the capacity of general dentists to effectively serve young children, and to support the expansion of oral health into primary care medical settings. He is currently serving as Editor for a curated issue of the Journal of the California Dental Association on the subject of Dentistry for Patients with Special Health Care Needs scheduled for publication in June 2022. In addition to his role as Chair of the Division of Pediatric Dentistry at UCSF, he currently serves on several workgroups and task forces which are developing local and regional strategies to address the access to care problems faced by the SHCN population.

Henrietta Gutierrez & Jorden Gutierrez

Henrietta Gutierrez resides in Sacramento, California with her 2 sons. She has 2 beautiful sons, Jayden who is 9, and Jorden who is 8. Jorden was born with Down Syndrome. He is the light of their family. Being a single Mom of a kid with special needs hasn’t been easy but rewarding. Learning day by day by utilizing all available resources has been her safety net. Parenting didn’t come with a manual, but she strives to do what she can to make it easier on my family to ensure their needs are met. The beautiful family loves pets and spending quality time together.

Dr. Paul Glassman

Dr. Paul Glassman is the Associate Dean for Research and Community Engagement at the College of Dental Medicine at California Northstate University in Elk Grove, CA, and Professor Emeritus at the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni, School of Dentistry in San Francisco, CA. He has served on many national panels including the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) Committee on Oral Health Access to Services which produced the IOM report on Improving Access to Oral Health Care for Vulnerable and Underserved Populations. Dr. Glassman is a pioneer and has led the national movement to improve oral health using telehealth-connected teams and Virtual Dental Homes. Dr. Glassman has been prominent in advocacy efforts on a state and national level for health system reform to improve oral health systems for a wide variety of underserved groups.

Elena Francisco

Elena has practiced dental hygiene for more than 40 years in northern California. She has been on the dental hygiene faculty at the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry (Dugoni School) since 2005. She became licensed as a Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice (RDHAP) in 2005. As an RDHAP, she has treated patients of all ages, all with some special health care needs. She is currently the Program Director for RDHAP Program at the Dugoni School. Her passion is mentoring future clinicians to provide safe and evidence-based care to patients in the dentally underserved community.

Jean Calvo

Dr. Jean Marie Calvo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orofacial Sciences. Dr. Calvo earned her doctor of dental surgery degree at the UCSF School of Dentistry, where she also completed her specialty training in pediatric dentistry. Prior to doing her residency, she completed her Master’s of Public Health at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health with a focus on social determinants of health. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she provides dental care to children and adolescents, with the goals of improving their oral health and making dental visits fun. She is devoted to increasing access to dental care for all children and is particularly passionate about providing care to underserved children, such as those with complex medical conditions or other special health care needs. This is also a subject of her research.

Candace Nicolson

Candace Niccolson, MEd, BSDH, RDH, RDHAP graduated cum laude from Oregon Institute of Technology with BS in Dental Hygiene and Concordia University with a Master of Education, Curriculum, and Instruction. She has 15 years of experience in dentistry with a focus on providing dental hygiene care for people with special needs. Candace is currently the Dental Services Specialist at San Andreas Regional Center (SARC), a private non-profit corporation that provides services and supports to people with developmental disabilities. She is responsible for managing and provisioning dental services ranging from general dentistry to sedation dentistry and RDHAP services for SARCs 18,000+ consumers. Candace also provides consultation with SARC staff and other dental professionals to ensure the dental resources offered to meet the consumer’s unique dental needs.

Evidence-Based Techniques for Oral Health Behavior and Promotion for People with Developmental Disabilities

Course Description

This session will provide dental providers and their support personnel with an understanding of the importance of behavior change. It will also highlight some basics of oral health literacy and provide the learners with evidence-based techniques to promote oral health in clinical and community settings.

  • Learn from a self-advocate’s experience accessing specialized dental care in San Francisco, California.
  • Understand the role of health behavior in dentistry.
  • Learn about motivational communication: One-on-One oral health promotion in dental offices.
  • Learn tools to improve oral health literacy in clinical practice. 
  • Learn tools to improve oral health literacy in community settings.
  • Learn steps for effective desensitization for people with developmental disabilities in clinical settings.

Sara Desumala

Sara Desumala is an adult who has learning disability, visual impairment, and Cerebral Palsy. She struggled finding a dentist who could cater to her special health care needs in the Bay Area. 

Dr. Marita Rohr Inglehart

Dr. Marita R. Inglehart is a  professor of dentistry in the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine, an adjunct professor in the Department of Psychology and an Inaugural University Diversity & Social Transformation Professor at the University of Michigan. She received her education at the University of Mannheim in Germany where she also was a faculty member.

Dr. Inglehart addresses the role of diversity and social justice in dental education and in oral health care settings. Her research has focused on how to educate future and current dental care providers to become culturally literate, and on documenting how poor oral health of patients from underserved backgrounds affects their quality of life.

She has published over 150 peer-reviewed publications, four books and numerous book chapters.

Dr. Erin Shah

Erin Shah received her D.D.S. from the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni Dental School (UOP). She stayed on to teach at UOP and worked in private practice and public health before specializing in Pediatric Dentistry. She completed her Pediatric Dentistry Residency at The University of Illinois at Chicago, then returned to the Bay area to continue teaching and working in private practice and public health. In residency and practice, she works with children with autism, complex medical conditions, and severe dental needs. Dr. Shah is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists. She serves on the Board and is Chair of Legislative Committee for the San Francisco Dental Society. Dr. Shah is an attending at Stanford Children’s Health/Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital. She is passionate about customizing dental prevention to families and their lifestyles and advocates on access to care issues.

Jamie Chang

Jamie Chang is a third-year dental student at the UCSF School of Dentistry, expecting to graduate in 2023. As a 2021-2022 Albert Schweitzer fellow, she engaged in a one-year fellowship committed to community service. Throughout this past year, she partnered with a nonprofit called The Arc San Francisco, which supports adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, to improve oral health outcomes among this population. She held weekly dental educational sessions over Zoom with Arc clients, as well as one-on-one sessions with them and their caregivers to provide individualized support and attention to their personal obstacles and experiences with dental care. Moving forward, she hopes to pursue pediatric dentistry and continue her commitment to empowering others, especially children from underserved backgrounds and those with special needs.

The Landscape of Special Needs Care in California and Opportunities to Advocate (recorded webinar)

This session will provide dental providers and their support personnel with a vivid picture of California’s efforts to address the barriers to care for people with developmental disabilities. It will also enlist opportunities to advocate for dental and developmental disabilities communities. The session will highlight some real-time stories on self-advocate’s efforts to advocate a robust dental system in California.

  • Identify various programs endeavoring to enhance oral health equity for people with Developmental Disabilities in California.
  • Learn about Medi-Cal Dental Codes to accommodate people with Special Health Care Needs.
  • Understand the billing documentation to get reimbursed for services included in the unique Medi-Cal Dental Codes.
  • Understand the role, scope, and work of regional centers in California to improve dental care coordination for people with Special Health Care Needs.

Dr. Allen Wong

Dr. Allen Wong has taught postdoctoral general dentistry for over 35 years in AEGD programs (Pacific and University California San Francisco) and is the director of Pacific’s Hospital Dentistry Program.  He has lectured nationally and internationally in the areas of special care dentistry, rotary endodontics, implant restorations, and minimally invasive dentistry.  He is active with Special Olympics Special Smiles program (Global Clinical Advisor), President American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry (AADMD) and member of Special Care Dentistry Association (SCDA). Past president CAMBRA Coalition (Caries Management By Risk Assessment), Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Fraternity (Delta Delta Chapter) Past president, California Dental Association Foundation Board of Director, Secretary. San Francisco Dental Society Dental Health Committee Chairman. Santa Fe Group, Fellow ( 2021 for IDD populations).

Donnell Kenworthy & DJ Kenworthy

Donnell is grateful to her son, DJ, for opening her eyes to the possibilities in disabilities! DJ has taught her that a life complicated by Down syndrome, autism, medical, physical and communicative disabilities is still very much a life, and should be lived with love, humor, the right supports and exuberant joy! DJ and Donnell were privileged to share DJ’s story to the Little Hoover Commission and to be featured in the commission’s report #230, April, 2016: Fixing Denti-Cal. Donnell currently serves on several committees and boards, including the Sacramento County Medi-Cal Dental Advisory Board Special Needs/General Anesthesia Workgroup. She and DJ have worked with various legislators on creating a more responsive and equitable system of medical and dental care.

Dr. Jay Kumar

Dr. Jayanth V. Kumar has served as State Dental Director since 2015 at the California Department of Public Health. Before joining the California Department of Public Health, Dr. Kumar held several positions at the New York State Department of Health from 1980 to 2015, including director for the Bureau of Dental Health, assistant director, and dental public health epidemiologist. In addition, he was an associate professor at the School of Public Health, University of Albany, and New York state dental public health residency program director. His role as program director and manager has been defined by a strong commitment to elevating oral health as a priority in the state’s health agenda. Working with partners and stakeholders, Dr. Kumar has advanced innovative solutions to guide statewide programs and policies.

Jeannette Diaz

Jeannette Diaz is dually licensed as a Registered Dental Hygienist and a Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice. She holds a master’s degree in dental hygiene and a master’s degree in public health. Jeannette has over 14 years of clinical dental hygiene experience which also includes owning and operating a portable dental hygiene practice. Jeannette has experience working with individuals with complex medical needs, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and older adults. She has been actively involved with dental hygiene leadership at the local, state, and national level. Jeannette currently works as a dental liaison for the California Department of Developmental Services.

Dr. Jeannette Burkhardt Pino

Jeannette Burkhardt Pino, Ph.D. is Senior Supervising Psychologist at the Department of Developmental Services, providing program development, leadership, and supervision of the Clinical Services Branch in the Office of Statewide Clinical Services. She has worked in developmental disabilities for 15 years, beginning with her tenure at Fairview Developmental Center, Costa Mesa, where, among other responsibilities, she was Clinical Lead in the Adolescent Unit, the Autism Unit, and the Medical Behavioral Unit. Before leading the DDS Clinical Services Branch, Dr. Burkhardt Pino provided oversight, management and program development of the DDS Enhanced Behavioral Support Homes, and Community Crisis Homes Statewide Program.  She has specialized training as a Health psychologist, having completed her doctoral internship at Long Beach Memorial Hospital Family Medicine.  She completed a post-doctoral associate position at University of CA Irvine, performing clinical research with the Pritzker-Conte Neuropsychiatric Disorders Research Consortium. Dr. Burkhardt Pino has specialized training in traumatic stress and neurodevelopmentally informed approaches to trauma.

Dr. Margaret Delmore

Margaret Delmore, MD, DDS a recently appointed Dental Program Consultant to the California Department of Healthcare Services, Medi-cal Dental Services brings to the table a robust educational background as a physician, dentist, and pharmacist. Furthermore, she is affiliated with various hospital systems in the Sacramento area including, Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento, Mercy General Hospital – Dignity Health, Sacramento and Kaiser Hospitals, Roseville and South Sacramento and  volunteering on Sutter’s Craniofacial Team.  As a clinician her mission was quality, compassionate care.  As a public servant her mission is aligned with the DHCS’ mission to provide Californian’s with access to affordable, integrated, high-quality health care, with a vision to preserve and improve the overall health and well-being of all Californians.

Brianna Pittman-Spencer

Brianna Pittman-Spencer is the California Dental Association’s Government Affairs Director, leading the legislative and regulatory advocacy team since 2015. For over a decade, she has worked in state level governmental advocacy on a wide range of high profile health care policy issues, including expanding access to women’s reproductive care, implementation of health care reform, and increasing Medicaid funding and access. Brianna holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Women’s Studies from San Diego State University and a Masters of Public Administration from the USC Price School of Public Policy.
