In this workshop participants will explore sexual health topics through the lens of sex positivity and harm reduction. Participants in this workshop will define sexual health and unpack how their own relationship with sex and sexuality impacts their ability to connect with and support others. In addition we will discuss sexual health disparities and best practices in combating these disparities through counseling, education and prevention efforts.

This session will provide dental providers and their support personnel with innovative strategies using an upstream approach to address the long-standing challenge of getting access to dental care by people with Special Health Care Needs. It will explain the scope of work of Registered Dental Hygienists in Alternative Practices (RDHAP) in implementing these strategies and increase learners’ understanding of different dental workforce models. It will also demonstrate some successful innovative projects and their efforts to address the long-standing challenge of getting access to dental care by people with Special Health Care Needs.

Dr. Ray Stewart
Dr. Stewart is the Professor and Chair of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of California in San Francisco. He has had a distinguished career in both academic dentistry and private practice. He has served in varying roles as educator, clinical provider, researcher, program director and division chair and private practitioner where he was the Founding Partner in a large multi-office Pediatric Dental Practice on the Central Coast of California. His more than 4 decades of experience as a Pediatric Dentist has fueled his passion and commitment to expanding access to oral health care for children with special health care needs (SHCN), including those children with medical complexities. He is currently a Principal Investigator for a HRSA training grant which combines interprofessional training in Pediatric Dentistry and Dental Public Health. He has also participated in several statewide initiatives, developing courses designed to increase the capacity of general dentists to effectively serve young children, and to support the expansion of oral health into primary care medical settings. He is currently serving as Editor for a curated issue of the Journal of the California Dental Association on the subject of Dentistry for Patients with Special Health Care Needs scheduled for publication in June 2022. In addition to his role as Chair of the Division of Pediatric Dentistry at UCSF, he currently serves on several workgroups and task forces which are developing local and regional strategies to address the access to care problems faced by the SHCN population.
Henrietta Gutierrez & Jorden Gutierrez
Henrietta Gutierrez resides in Sacramento, California with her 2 sons. She has 2 beautiful sons, Jayden who is 9, and Jorden who is 8. Jorden was born with Down Syndrome. He is the light of their family. Being a single Mom of a kid with special needs hasn’t been easy but rewarding. Learning day by day by utilizing all available resources has been her safety net. Parenting didn’t come with a manual, but she strives to do what she can to make it easier on my family to ensure their needs are met. The beautiful family loves pets and spending quality time together.
Dr. Paul Glassman
Dr. Paul Glassman is the Associate Dean for Research and Community Engagement at the College of Dental Medicine at California Northstate University in Elk Grove, CA, and Professor Emeritus at the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni, School of Dentistry in San Francisco, CA. He has served on many national panels including the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) Committee on Oral Health Access to Services which produced the IOM report on Improving Access to Oral Health Care for Vulnerable and Underserved Populations. Dr. Glassman is a pioneer and has led the national movement to improve oral health using telehealth-connected teams and Virtual Dental Homes. Dr. Glassman has been prominent in advocacy efforts on a state and national level for health system reform to improve oral health systems for a wide variety of underserved groups.
Elena Francisco
Elena has practiced dental hygiene for more than 40 years in northern California. She has been on the dental hygiene faculty at the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry (Dugoni School) since 2005. She became licensed as a Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice (RDHAP) in 2005. As an RDHAP, she has treated patients of all ages, all with some special health care needs. She is currently the Program Director for RDHAP Program at the Dugoni School. Her passion is mentoring future clinicians to provide safe and evidence-based care to patients in the dentally underserved community.
Jean Calvo
Dr. Jean Marie Calvo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orofacial Sciences. Dr. Calvo earned her doctor of dental surgery degree at the UCSF School of Dentistry, where she also completed her specialty training in pediatric dentistry. Prior to doing her residency, she completed her Master’s of Public Health at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health with a focus on social determinants of health. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she provides dental care to children and adolescents, with the goals of improving their oral health and making dental visits fun. She is devoted to increasing access to dental care for all children and is particularly passionate about providing care to underserved children, such as those with complex medical conditions or other special health care needs. This is also a subject of her research.
Candace Nicolson
Candace Niccolson, MEd, BSDH, RDH, RDHAP graduated cum laude from Oregon Institute of Technology with BS in Dental Hygiene and Concordia University with a Master of Education, Curriculum, and Instruction. She has 15 years of experience in dentistry with a focus on providing dental hygiene care for people with special needs. Candace is currently the Dental Services Specialist at San Andreas Regional Center (SARC), a private non-profit corporation that provides services and supports to people with developmental disabilities. She is responsible for managing and provisioning dental services ranging from general dentistry to sedation dentistry and RDHAP services for SARCs 18,000+ consumers. Candace also provides consultation with SARC staff and other dental professionals to ensure the dental resources offered to meet the consumer’s unique dental needs.

Sara Desumala
Sara Desumala is an adult who has learning disability, visual impairment, and Cerebral Palsy. She struggled finding a dentist who could cater to her special health care needs in the Bay Area.
Dr. Marita Rohr Inglehart
Dr. Marita R. Inglehart is a professor of dentistry in the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine, an adjunct professor in the Department of Psychology and an Inaugural University Diversity & Social Transformation Professor at the University of Michigan. She received her education at the University of Mannheim in Germany where she also was a faculty member.
Dr. Inglehart addresses the role of diversity and social justice in dental education and in oral health care settings. Her research has focused on how to educate future and current dental care providers to become culturally literate, and on documenting how poor oral health of patients from underserved backgrounds affects their quality of life.
She has published over 150 peer-reviewed publications, four books and numerous book chapters.
Dr. Erin Shah
Erin Shah received her D.D.S. from the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni Dental School (UOP). She stayed on to teach at UOP and worked in private practice and public health before specializing in Pediatric Dentistry. She completed her Pediatric Dentistry Residency at The University of Illinois at Chicago, then returned to the Bay area to continue teaching and working in private practice and public health. In residency and practice, she works with children with autism, complex medical conditions, and severe dental needs. Dr. Shah is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists. She serves on the Board and is Chair of Legislative Committee for the San Francisco Dental Society. Dr. Shah is an attending at Stanford Children’s Health/Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital. She is passionate about customizing dental prevention to families and their lifestyles and advocates on access to care issues.
Jamie Chang
Jamie Chang is a third-year dental student at the UCSF School of Dentistry, expecting to graduate in 2023. As a 2021-2022 Albert Schweitzer fellow, she engaged in a one-year fellowship committed to community service. Throughout this past year, she partnered with a nonprofit called The Arc San Francisco, which supports adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, to improve oral health outcomes among this population. She held weekly dental educational sessions over Zoom with Arc clients, as well as one-on-one sessions with them and their caregivers to provide individualized support and attention to their personal obstacles and experiences with dental care. Moving forward, she hopes to pursue pediatric dentistry and continue her commitment to empowering others, especially children from underserved backgrounds and those with special needs.

Dr. Allen Wong
Dr. Allen Wong has taught postdoctoral general dentistry for over 35 years in AEGD programs (Pacific and University California San Francisco) and is the director of Pacific’s Hospital Dentistry Program. He has lectured nationally and internationally in the areas of special care dentistry, rotary endodontics, implant restorations, and minimally invasive dentistry. He is active with Special Olympics Special Smiles program (Global Clinical Advisor), President American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry (AADMD) and member of Special Care Dentistry Association (SCDA). Past president CAMBRA Coalition (Caries Management By Risk Assessment), Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Fraternity (Delta Delta Chapter) Past president, California Dental Association Foundation Board of Director, Secretary. San Francisco Dental Society Dental Health Committee Chairman. Santa Fe Group, Fellow ( 2021 for IDD populations).
Donnell Kenworthy & DJ Kenworthy
Donnell is grateful to her son, DJ, for opening her eyes to the possibilities in disabilities! DJ has taught her that a life complicated by Down syndrome, autism, medical, physical and communicative disabilities is still very much a life, and should be lived with love, humor, the right supports and exuberant joy! DJ and Donnell were privileged to share DJ’s story to the Little Hoover Commission and to be featured in the commission’s report #230, April, 2016: Fixing Denti-Cal. Donnell currently serves on several committees and boards, including the Sacramento County Medi-Cal Dental Advisory Board Special Needs/General Anesthesia Workgroup. She and DJ have worked with various legislators on creating a more responsive and equitable system of medical and dental care.
Dr. Jay Kumar
Dr. Jayanth V. Kumar has served as State Dental Director since 2015 at the California Department of Public Health. Before joining the California Department of Public Health, Dr. Kumar held several positions at the New York State Department of Health from 1980 to 2015, including director for the Bureau of Dental Health, assistant director, and dental public health epidemiologist. In addition, he was an associate professor at the School of Public Health, University of Albany, and New York state dental public health residency program director. His role as program director and manager has been defined by a strong commitment to elevating oral health as a priority in the state’s health agenda. Working with partners and stakeholders, Dr. Kumar has advanced innovative solutions to guide statewide programs and policies.
Jeannette Diaz
Jeannette Diaz is dually licensed as a Registered Dental Hygienist and a Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice. She holds a master’s degree in dental hygiene and a master’s degree in public health. Jeannette has over 14 years of clinical dental hygiene experience which also includes owning and operating a portable dental hygiene practice. Jeannette has experience working with individuals with complex medical needs, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and older adults. She has been actively involved with dental hygiene leadership at the local, state, and national level. Jeannette currently works as a dental liaison for the California Department of Developmental Services.
Dr. Jeannette Burkhardt Pino
Jeannette Burkhardt Pino, Ph.D. is Senior Supervising Psychologist at the Department of Developmental Services, providing program development, leadership, and supervision of the Clinical Services Branch in the Office of Statewide Clinical Services. She has worked in developmental disabilities for 15 years, beginning with her tenure at Fairview Developmental Center, Costa Mesa, where, among other responsibilities, she was Clinical Lead in the Adolescent Unit, the Autism Unit, and the Medical Behavioral Unit. Before leading the DDS Clinical Services Branch, Dr. Burkhardt Pino provided oversight, management and program development of the DDS Enhanced Behavioral Support Homes, and Community Crisis Homes Statewide Program. She has specialized training as a Health psychologist, having completed her doctoral internship at Long Beach Memorial Hospital Family Medicine. She completed a post-doctoral associate position at University of CA Irvine, performing clinical research with the Pritzker-Conte Neuropsychiatric Disorders Research Consortium. Dr. Burkhardt Pino has specialized training in traumatic stress and neurodevelopmentally informed approaches to trauma.
Dr. Margaret Delmore
Margaret Delmore, MD, DDS a recently appointed Dental Program Consultant to the California Department of Healthcare Services, Medi-cal Dental Services brings to the table a robust educational background as a physician, dentist, and pharmacist. Furthermore, she is affiliated with various hospital systems in the Sacramento area including, Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento, Mercy General Hospital – Dignity Health, Sacramento and Kaiser Hospitals, Roseville and South Sacramento and volunteering on Sutter’s Craniofacial Team. As a clinician her mission was quality, compassionate care. As a public servant her mission is aligned with the DHCS’ mission to provide Californian’s with access to affordable, integrated, high-quality health care, with a vision to preserve and improve the overall health and well-being of all Californians.
Brianna Pittman-Spencer
Brianna Pittman-Spencer is the California Dental Association’s Government Affairs Director, leading the legislative and regulatory advocacy team since 2015. For over a decade, she has worked in state level governmental advocacy on a wide range of high profile health care policy issues, including expanding access to women’s reproductive care, implementation of health care reform, and increasing Medicaid funding and access. Brianna holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Women’s Studies from San Diego State University and a Masters of Public Administration from the USC Price School of Public Policy.

Rachel Kripke-Ludwig
Rachel Kripke-Ludwig (she/hers) is a nonspeaking, college-bound autistic advocate. She attends Open Mind School in Menlo Park and is a Community Partner in the AASPIRE Community Based Participatory Research Group, working on a five-year project to develop tools to measure outcomes for adult autism services. She is also on the Community Advisory Council of CommunicationFIRST, the only nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and advancing the civil rights of people who cannot rely on speech to communicate. Megumi J Okumura, MD, MAS
Dr. Megumi Okumura’s research is aimed at studying and formulating interventions that will address barriers and facilitators to chronic illness care for children with special health care needs as they transition from the pediatric to adult health care setting. She is dual board-certified in general pediatrics and internal medicine and therefore has a unique perspective on the health care issues affecting the entire age spectrum of patients with childhood-onset chronic illnesses. Her research and professional goal is to improve health care quality for youth and young adults with chronic conditions as they transition from pediatric to adult health care. Ultimately, she intends to apply her research to chronic illness care across the lifespan. Dr. Okumura’s current research program focuses on studies that will inform ways to improve the quality of health care among adolescents and young adults with chronic conditions. In order to best design programs that can help these YSHCN, her research has focused on epidemiologic studies of health care utilization and health care needs. Her work has focused on interventions that will assist YSHCN transition from pediatric to adult health care. She has focused her interventions within the primary care setting as well as in subspecialty care (Cystic Fibrosis and Diabetes). Additionally, she works with community partners around the Bay Area to help develop mechanisms to improve the care of persons with disabilities in the community.
Dr. Clarissa Kripke, MD, FAAFP
Dr. Clarissa Kripke is a Clinical Professor of Family and Community Medicine at the University of California San Francisco. She directs the Office of Developmental Primary Care whose mission is to build the capacity of the healthcare system to serve transition-age youth and adults with developmental disabilities. She is a primary care physician to some of the Bay Areas most medically fragile and behaviorally complex patients. She is also Vice-Chair of the board of CommunicationFirst, a nonprofit whose mission is to advocate for the rights of people for whom speech is not reliable communication.
Tara Glavin, MA, BCBA
Tara Glavin is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) at The UCSF Center for ASD & NDDs. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee. She obtained her Master of the Arts degree in Teaching and Special Education from Roosevelt University in Chicago and became a BCBA at Stony Brook University in New York. Tara has extensive experience supporting individuals with ASD and other NDDs in the classroom, individual settings, and the community. She now trains other professionals, community members, and families in the support of persons with ASD.
Geraldine Collins-Bride, RN, MS, ANP-BC, FAAN
Gerri Collins-Bride is an adult nurse practitioner and Professor Emeritus in the UCSF School of Nursing where she is the Co-director of the Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program. For over 35 years she has been practicing in General Internal Medicine at UCSF as a primary care provider for adults with developmental and psychiatric disabilities. She is a member of the Redwood Coast Regional Center Telemedicine “TACT” team and for the past twenty years, co-chairs the annual CME course on “Developmental Disabilities: An Update for Health Professionals” with her partner, Dr. Lucy Crain.
Ben Meisel, MD, FAAP (Moderator)
“Dr. Ben” is a pediatrician and Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics focused on improving the lives of children with special health needs. He serves as Medical Director of California Children’s Services San Francisco, is a UCSF Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics, and is former Medical Director of The Painted Turtle – California’s SeriousFun Children’s Network California camp founded by actor Paul Newman. He brings special needs advocacy to initiatives including CavityFree SF, UCSF Chronic Illness Center, SF Special Needs Anesthesia Dentistry Workgroup and SF C2A Transition Workgroup. He will be serving as guest editor of the California Dental Association’s 2022 Journal edition on Oral Health Care for People with Disabilities. In addition to his medical career, Dr. Ben is an award-winning children’s recording artist and founder of Dr. Ben & Company, “Building Play Into Health” for children with special health needs.
