The social media is a very powerful too in bridging communication gap among various stakeholders in a research. It is a great way of cutting down on cost be it through platforms such as facebook, whatsapp, skype and others. The only challenge which we face is the issue of network and data fees but which I feel can still be handled. It is imperative to know that the cost benefit analysis of using the social media as a communication tool has more benefits compared to the cost. For those who are yet to explore this opportunity, I would strongly advise that we include this in our strategies in our research programs.

The truth is in conducting research, there are still unforeseen contingencies that may come your way which could affect your budget, resources most times are not always sufficient but the principle that helps in the curbing of the challenge is the principle of “effective and efficient management”. Also leveraging on existing organizations and civil societies who are willing to support your work but financially and otherwise. Most importantly, before the initiation of any research at all, a budget should be drafted and funds sourced and realized so as not to lead to unprecedented breaks and stops once the research starts.

Yes, you are very correct but i must say that social media is a tool which can be used both negatively and positively. Hence, if it is used as an avenue to disseminate wrong and false information, we should also use that same avenue to correct those wrong and false information that have been disseminated.

The best way to ensure community stakeholder understanding which is paramount to the overall goal of the engagement program is to organize meetings with the stakeholders where the intention of the research as well as its benefits are brought to the table, they are explained in thorough details and their input as well as suggestions are sought. Questions are also asked and answered. This could be done as many times as possible based on the inherent need for it. This would in a large way ensure that the community stakeholders such as the community leaders, youth leaders and others are all carried along and their wishes are put side by side the overall goal.

Everything balls down to communication between the team and the stakeholders from the very beginning. This would aid mutual understanding and effective execution of the program.

Every member of the team and the leaders have to have a good working engagement. They both need to be in a round table discussion and highlight each others role in order to avoid misunderstanding and arguments. The leaders need to realize that they are to lead and not oppress, give everyone a listening here and ensure the smooth execution of the assigned roles to the team members but most importantly lead by example. Finally, the team members need to be attentive and committed to the duty on ground. All this is directed towards a successful stakeholder engagement.

Hi everyone, my name is Williams Elizabeth Talatu, an undergraduate of the University of Lagos, Nigeria. I am a community advocate and activist for adolescents girls and serve as a volunteer for various non-governmental organizations such as United Nations Population Fund, Nigeria under the Youth Participatory Platform (YPP), Action Health Incorporated (AHI), Youth Empowerment Development Initiative (YEDI) and Hello Lagos Youth Friendly Center. I have also served as a member of the Girls Engagement Advisory Board (GEAB) with Advocates for Youth based in Washington DC. In this capacities I have been able to advocate for the rights of the vulnerable and marginalized girls domestically and internationally, participated in high level meetings, provided free sexual education in schools, carried out social media advocacy and facilitated training and sessions on girls development. As a current leaving No Nigerian Behind (LeNNiB) champion undergoing training with New HIV Vaccine and Microbicide Advocacy Society (NHVMAS), I intend to increase my knowledge on HIV prevention and treatment advocacy whilst acquiring new advocacy skills and make contacts in the area of HIV/AIDS. The GPP is a great platform for me to achieve this and I look forward to learning from one another.
