Harm Reduction, Stigma and Pregnant People Who Use Drugs

January 18, 2024 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Training Overview:

Pregnant and parenting people who use substances are one of the most stigmatized and demonized subsets of the population. Experience with bias, judgment, and scrutiny – especially from healthcare workers, loved ones, family, and friends – can isolate people and make it harder to seek prenatal care, mental health counseling, social services, and community support. Harm reduction offers us both philosophical underpinnings as well as concrete strategies and tools to identify/challenge stigma and support pregnant and parenting people who use drugs.

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Define stigma in relation to parenting persons and babies with NAS.
  • Share, discuss, and apply shared experiences regarding work with parenting persons and babies with NAS and what approaches have been successful for dealing with stigma in the literature and within our team.
  • Identify, discuss, and practice ways to deal with stigma when working with parenting persons and babies with NAS.
