Training Overview:

More than 50% of people who have a substance use disorder have a co-occurring mental health disorder.  It is the rule, not the exception, with trauma almost universal among people who misuse substances.  Yet more than half of young people who misuse drugs will mature out of a problematic relationship with drugs by the age of 30.  Who are they?  Who doesn’t?  And how can we help increase the likelihood that they will? This workshop will focus on the unique interactions between individual’s drugs and mental health – highlighting the medicinal and social benefits as well as the harms.

Training Objectives:

  1. Recognize at least one reason how stigmatizing language contributes negatively to clinician countertransference.
  2. Identify at least two mental conditions closely associated with substance use.
  3. Describe what adverse childhood experiences are.
  4. Identify effects of at least two substances on a person’s mental health.
