Training Overview:

This two hour training will introduce the concepts of social inequalities faced by people who use drugs, the stigma they experience, and how this impacts their ability to access services. Through evaluation of one’s own potential role in perpetuating drug-related stigma, participants will develop new strategies for building more authentic and productive relationships with clients, as well as dismantling stigma related to drug use in their day-to-day lives.

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Recall the meaning of stigma & related concepts
  • Identify three ways in which drug users experience stigma and discrimination
  • Identify two consequences of drug-related stigma and discrimination on access to services
  • Identify conceptual and practical tools to challenge stigma and support the needs of people who use drugs

Advanced Motivational Interviewing: MI Part 2 (small group) 6.20.23

Training Overview

In this two-hour online training, participants will build their Motivational Interviewing skills and knowledge by focusing on understanding MI’s 5 clinical principles and strategies (reflective listening, open questions, affirmations, summarizing, and eliciting self-motivational statements). This session will also include roadblocks to reflective listening, the use of additional readiness tools, such as assessing importance and confidence, the two phases of MI, such as building motivation and strengthening client’s commitment to change, and handling resistance. This workshop will give participants the space to exercise their Motivational interviewing skills through discussion, scenarios and role plays.

PREREQUISTE: Prior to attending this training, participants should have participated in at least one Motivational Interviewing workshop or class or have comparable experience.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the 5 Motivational Interviewing clinical principles and learn the 5 Motivational Interviewing strategies.
  • Learn and practice what not to do, including roadblocks to reflective listening.
  • Practice using MI strategies to elicit and reinforce change talk surrounding harm reduction, infectious disease prevention, and managing substance use, among other range of behaviors impacting health and wellness.
  • Enhance knowledge of motivational techniques and readiness for change by learning and using other tools, such as the assessment of importance and confidence about particular changes.

Training Overview:

This training provides a brief overview of drug related stigma and then takes a deeper dive into depressants and stimulants. We review consumption methods and effects of each drugs, as well as how to recognize and support someone who is in withdrawal, is too high, or is experiencing overdose of each substance we cover. Drugs reviewed in the session include: opioid ( heroin, Fentanyl, and prescription opioids), alcohol, meth, crack and cocaine. This session also provides information on safer use, and resources attendants can use with their participants.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the definition of a drug, and how drugs impact the body and brain
  2. Identify four common  drugs and their physical and psychological effects 
  3. Understand how to identify and respond to withdrawal and overdose ;

Dismantling Drug Related Stigma (Small group) 4/13/23

Thursday, April 13th, 10:30am-12:30pm

Training Overview:

This two hour training will introduce the concepts of social inequalities faced by people who use drugs, the stigma they experience, and how this impacts their ability to access services. Through evaluation of one’s own potential role in perpetuating drug-related stigma, participants will develop new strategies for building more authentic and productive relationships with clients, as well as dismantling stigma related to drug use in their day-to-day lives.

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Recall the meaning of stigma & related concepts
  • Identify three ways in which drug users experience stigma and discrimination
  • Identify two consequences of drug-related stigma and discrimination on access to services
  • Identify conceptual and practical tools to challenge stigma and support the needs of people who use drugs
  • Explain three ways to address stigma at individual and agency levels

Foundations of Harm Reduction 4.27.23 (Small group)

Training Overview:

This training will provide a foundation in the principles of harm reduction and define harm reduction as an intervention, philosophy, and movement that participants can incorporate into their own work to better support people who use drugs. This training will give participants an opportunity to explore the principles of harm reduction and strategies for implementing them into their day-to-day work

By the end of this training, you will be able to:

  • Explore 2-3 common motivations of drug use
  • Define 3 key principles of harm reduction
  • List at least three harm reduction options for substance use behaviors
  • Identify 2-3 harm reduction services
