The global political landscape is rapidly shifting. And simply stated– political discord in countries like South Africa and the change of administration in the US will impact funding for science, research and development. The NIH stated that different research fields are beginning to “learn each other’s language”.Although collaboration between disciplines is the way to go… the reality is that we often operate in silos and fail to meaningfully engage other researchers …

Think about your own engagement program. Can you describe a lesson learned about GPP implementation that may be helpful in your own context?

Is there a ‘promising engagement practice’ that emerged from a previous clinical trial or related research program that can be replicated for cost-effective engagement of your target population?

    Post your thoughts!

Prioritization of stakeholders and need for wider advisory mechanisms besides CAB are two of my take away’s of this course. Being more systematical in engaging community will prevent gaps that may have negative impact in the future.
A more professionalized and thoughtful communication is another good point. Have all the sensitive issues in mind, proactively communicate them when addressing stakeholders may prevent conflict and distrust and give a thoughtful and confident image.

I am currently involved in a maternal and child health education intervention in slum communities in Nigeria. Our research team works with scientists including medical doctors, public health specialists, child psychologist, nutritionists, nurses etc. as well as non scientists such as traditional birth attendants, government officials, media personnel, traditional rulers and others that have high influence on the outcome of the intervention. Though their inputs came at various stages but are relevant to a successful implementation. Engaging meaningfully other scientists offers wide approach to tackling issues/challenges, eliminates ”closed thinking” and gives room to think outside the box and have a balanced conclusion. The challenge is identifying and prioritizing their relevance and dealing with conflict of interest.

In my current trial we did not involve the local stakeholders early enough and were making protocol changes at the time of the Investigator meetings. With the political changes globally we definitely need to be more conscious of the timing of collaborations and local interactions in order to be more efficient and ensure we stick to our timelines as this all relates back to amount and length of funding provided for each project.

Yes Involving all stakeholders from local, broader and even national stakeholders in all processes can be cost effective, This although needs proper planning.

Involving Stakeholders from local it is good because they will assist to give the support and give right information to community members and some of them they will share their resources with you in order to have dialogues and workshop eg venues

For us, allowing the stakeholders especially the community stakeholders to be greatly involved in decisions regarding place/time of meeting greatly helped reduce cost and yielded increased participation. The increased participation helped reduce associated followup cost.

Yes, I agree with this and going forward we are working to involve our stakeholders earlier in the process, as more time to complete activities due to poor planning costs more money and allocation of resources in terms of staff, etc.
